Teach Mahjong with HeyMahjong
Teach Mahjong on Your Own Terms. Keep 100% of What You Earn.
HeyMahjong connects independent Mahjong teachers with students looking for private lessons, group classes, and online instruction throughout the Bay Area.
Teach Mahjong the way you already want to teach it — your rules, your rates, your schedule — and let us handle finding the students. HeyMahjong connects independent Mahjong instructors with beginners, local learners, and active play groups across the Bay Area and beyond.
You don’t need a venue. You don’t need a website. You don’t need to learn a booking system. You bring the teaching; we bring the students and the setup.
HeyMahjong charges instructors a flat $29 a month, free for the first month, and takes 0% commission on your class fees. Whatever you charge a student is what you keep.
We welcome independent Mahjong teachers specializing in all regional styles and variations:
- American Mahjong (NMJL rules)
- Japanese Riichi Mahjong
- Taiwanese Mahjong
- Singapore Style
- Other Regional & Traditional Styles

Should You Teach Mahjong with HeyMahjong?
We work with independent instructors who already teach Mahjong, or are ready to, and want more people at their tables. You’re likely a good fit if:
- You can teach Mahjong to a complete beginner, from their first tile to their first win
- You teach, or want to teach, in the Bay Area, or online from anywhere
- You’re comfortable running your own scheduling and collecting your own payments
- You want more students without cold-posting on community boards
This probably isn’t for you if you’re still learning the game yourself, or if you’re looking for a salaried position — everyone who joins us to teach Mahjong runs their own business.
Where the Students Come From
This is the part most teaching directories can’t offer. HeyMahjong doesn’t just list you and hope — we run real programs that real students sign up for.
We deliver beginner Mahjong programs in partnership with the cities of Mountain View, Los Gatos, and Riverbank, and we run private classes, parties, and corporate events for companies, VC firms, and retail partners throughout the Bay Area. Demand consistently outruns what our own calendar can cover.
That’s why we’re building the instructor directory: people arrive already looking for someone to teach Mahjong to them, often in a city or on a date we can’t serve. Those are the students we want to send to you.
See our city recreation programs and corporate events for what we’re already running.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own venue to teach Mahjong with HeyMahjong?
No. You don’t need a commercial space of any kind. Many of our instructors teach small groups in students’ homes, run tables in public spaces like coffee shops and libraries, or teach entirely online.
Does HeyMahjong take a commission on my class fees?
No. We take 0% commission. You set your own prices, collect payment from students directly, and keep 100% of what you earn. The only thing you pay us is the flat $29 monthly subscription — free for your first month.
Can I list Mahjong classes I already teach?
Yes. If you have beginner workshops, a series, or open play tables already on the calendar, send us the details and we’ll list the eligible ones on your profile and in our student class directory.
What styles of Mahjong can I teach?
American Mahjong (NMJL rules), Japanese Riichi, Taiwanese, and Singapore style are all supported. Other regional and traditional styles are welcome too — note it on the application and we’ll add it to your profile.
Do I have to build my own website or profile page?
No. Fill in the application with your photo, bio, styles taught, and teaching area, and our team formats and publishes your instructor card for you.
Do I have to teach Mahjong in the Bay Area?
Not necessarily. Most of our student demand is in the Bay Area, so that’s where a listing is worth the most — but if you teach online, you can take students from anywhere.
How many students will I get?
We can’t promise a number, and we won’t. What we can tell you is where the students come from: our city programs, corporate bookings, and the enquiries that reach us from people looking for a teacher. Your first month is free precisely so you can find out at no risk.
Can I cancel?
Any time, with no penalty and no notice period. Your profile comes down and that’s the end of it.
